Beckham is finally going to be able to suit up again and play. However, don't expect any paparazzi, pop star wives, or bicycle kicks on goal. It's Twany, not David.
Twany Beckham has satisfied the terms of his transfer from Mississippi State, and can begin logging minutes on the floor for the Widcats.
But, what does Twany bring to the Cats? What he brings is depth to the guard position, and experience in NCAA play. And, he adds even more length to the Cats, if it was even possible to do so.
Beckham comes to the Cats after not having the best fit in Starkville. He is a native of Louisville (Ballard High School) and made the decision to transfer back home to Kentucky as a walk-on. he has since earned a full scholarship. Coach Cal believes that Beckham will fit in nicely with the style of play the Cats employ. And, he fully expects Beckham's, albeit limited, experience in SEC league play to be of great benefit for the Big Blue.
Beckham had a run of the mill freshman campaign for MSU, seeing action being one of the first to come off the bench for the Bulldogs, and even logged some time in the NCAA Tournament, not scoring however. His freshman year was also highlighted by a foot injury, which kept him out until after the third game of the season in 2008-09. Beckham red-shirted his entire sophomore season in 2009-10. That year, he had bilateral hip surgery to remove bone spurs. His Junior year at MSU saw Beckham play in 14 games, before deciding to leave Starkville and transferring to Kentucky as a walk-on. He had started 5 games up until his transfer, and achieved career highs in points(9) and Assists(7) against Detroit and Appy State.
The only up-close look I have gotten at Beckham, was during Big Blue Madness. What I noticed about him that evening was that he can handle the ball, runs the point to a varying degree of success, mostly on the positive end, and he has great leaping ability....And he just looks so mad at the ball when he dunks.
I don't know what the future holds for Beckham in Lexington. However, I expect to see him log some minutes and to contribute greatly. With the at times erratic play of Teague, Tawny being a true point guard could add some needed stability and flow to the point guard position when needed. He is not going to be a scorer, but we have those.
I have said for months, the Beckham pick-up was going to be huge and of great benefit. Nobody really wanted to listen to me. Now, we will get to see if I was right.
Beckham is eligible to play this Saturday, against UT-Chattanooga at Rupp.
