4 Hours. 4 frakin' hours.
Ohio State met with NCAA officials today in a hotel conference room. After the two sides enjoyed free HBO and those awesome crescents as part of the free continental breakfast, they got down to business. And, it took all of 4 hours to complete. Not very long at all. So is that it? Is the stink over? Did the Sweater-Vested one's miscues not warrant more scrutiny? Ohio State and the legion of Fuckeyes all across the toilet of Ohio hope so. But, as Lee Corso says, Not so fast my friend!
This meeting, as pointed out by the NCAA earlier this week, was over the failure of institutional control issue in regards to tats for gold pants scandal that rocked Columbus. However, the NCAA let it be known that it was looking into other, possibly more severe infractions on behalf of Ohio State. It also stated, basically, that put these allegations together with the tat thing, The Buckeyes haven't heard the last from the NCAA, nor the phrase Lack of Institutional Control.
Drugs, Tats, and improper gifts such as cars, houses, and the act of making it appear Tyrelle Pryor could read are on the top of the list.
Ohio State vacated all it's wins from last season, a season in which they used players who should have been ineligible based on their word they were coming back to school. The upstanding citizen Pryor, was one of these players. They self imposed a 2 year probationary period on themselves, hoping to appease the NCAA from doing anything further. Just for shits here, but the vacating of all the wins from last season gives Marshall a win over the Buckeyes, as well as pushing the Buckeyes BCS record against the SEC to 0-10 instead of 1-9 which they acquired last season by holding off Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl. They vacated the win, but not the money they received from participating, and on the field winning the Sugar Bowl, however as it stands now, Ohio State has elected to give that money back, too. They also announced that they will be suspending several players as a result of the mess that was last season.
Now, keep in mind this is all on the schools own behalf, none of these punishments are the result of any NCAA action or demand. Still, we all know how retarded the NCAA can be, so this may or may not be enough to satisfy their taste for NCAA-branded justice. Which is non-existent.
So what does the NCAA do now? Do they second the self-imposed punishment and deem it to be enough, or do they do the unthinkable and further punish and make an example of one of their golden-child programs?
Whatever it is, don't expect it to make sense or be fair. After all, this is the NCAA we are talking about.
With all the scrutiny the NCAA has been under for the severe mis-handling of recent issues (Newton, Kanter, Selby, etc.,) The NCAA might feel they need to hit a home run in the public's perspective to re-establish faith in their ability to rule. So, could a harsher penalty indeed be on the horizon in Columbus?
With the allegations, one would most definitely think so. However, don't hold your breath for it. Now if this was another school we all know, they would make it to where even mentioning their name would be reason enough to be shot dead on site. Truth.
Ohio State, and fans of OSU and haters alike, can expect to know the decision and the fate of the Nuts within about 12 weeks or so.
