In what was originally kicked around last year when there was word that the 'Super Conferences' were coming, Texas A&M was rumored to be going south, southeast that is. When logistics, geography, and numerals no longer mean anything in a conferences name, The Aggies look to be leaving their traditional rivals and brethren behind.
All the SEC ever really needed was to open up Texas recruiting full blast. With the addition of A&M, that is exactly what it will do. The BIG 12 lost Nebraska and Colorado to the BIG 10 and Pac 10 respectively. There was hub-bub over Texas going Independent, The Mountain West and other conferences losing their juggernauts to conferences with more star power. BYU took their LDS football the way of that other Religious school power, and joined the Catholics in independent limbo.
Conferences getting their own tv networks, schools getting their own tv networks. It was a mess. The BCS didn't know whether it was good or bad, and what exactly it would do to their racket.
However, the dust cleared and no 'Super Conferences' were born, plenty of movement though. The one big move that people pegged as the signature move, one that would put the balance of power even more firmly in the SEC's hands, was the movement of Texas A&M to God's Conference. It didn't happen, and for the most part, some conferences got re-packaged, but everything remained status quo.
Apparently, that is all about to change. With rumors running rampant for the last several weeks that it was finally going to happen, that A&M was coming and it was bringing the fertile Texas recruiting fields with it, the SEC may have showed it's hand.
While officials at Texas A&M have denied any move will occur, and no plans have been made to do so, the SEC has called for a meeting of the presidents of the member institutions. The meeting is being called an emergency session by sources, and the business at hand is to discuss Texas A&M joining the conference.
It seems the driving factor in wanting to seek greener, southeastern pastures, is the school does not have faith in the way the conference is currently set up, and the above mentioned fact that Texas(via ESPN, same sort of deal it has with SEC) has it's own TV Network. That basically makes Texas an Independent within a conference.
Now with neither side speaking too much about the move, it should be noted that Texas A&M has voiced their displeasure with the Longhorn TV Network, and A&M's president, Mr. Bowen Loftin, met with SEC officials prior to an August 1st Big 12 meeting to discuss the effects of the Longhorn TV deal on the rest of the Big 12. The Texas House of Legislation has also called a meeting on August 16th to discuss the issue of Texas A&M leaving the Big 12.
During the meeting that Loftin had with the SEC, one of the main talking points was his his feelings on the TV Network. During this process, which dates back to last June, SEC President Mike Slive have formed a healthy friendship with one another. One which may have already sealed the deal.
The remaining members of the Big 12 feel as if the move is a done deal. They also have taken pot shots at A&M already, but mocking the Texas A&M code in reference to the dealings. Big 12 officials maintain that in the event that this does happen, the 9 remaining schools are solid and committed to the BIG 12.
And, all of this could be the precursor to a mythical 16-team 'Super Conference' in the SEC, which would just be known as simply The National Championship Conference. The SEC has also been linked to the courtship of gaining new members in Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Virginia Tech and Florida State from the ACC.
And just like vultures, the Pac 10 has made it very clear that they would love to gain Texas, Texas Tech, and the previous mentioned Oklahoma schools as well.
The days of the Big 12 are numbered. I see the SEC and PAC 10 swooping in and raiding the cupboard, bolstering their line-ups. Texas will more than likely go Indy, just for the sole purpose of it's revenue sharing that it would not want to do with other members in a conference.
The Super Conferences are here, folks. Next up, a REAL National Champion.
