Ashland loses their 'Hart'

As if keeping up with college and NFL coaching carousel in recent days wasn't taxing enough on the sports fan's mind, one of the biggest, and yes at times most braggadocios, local high school fanbases around have a coaching change of their own to anticipate:

Leon Hart has stepped down as The Ashland Tomcats head coach. It became as official as you could get just moments ago when he spoke about it on air before the start of the second quarter of tonight's Blazer/Mason County game. (Royals up big by the way)

Hart stated that he was still doing the scheduling for the upcoming JV and freshmen seasons, and that he was trying to fill one more date for the Varsity, but that was it. He didn't know who would replace him, nor any candidates for the job, but he would be more than happy to do whatever he could to help the transition.

"If there's something they think I can do to help, I'll do it." Said Coach Hart.

Hart had a successful run in Putnam during his tenure, and for the most part kept what has been often times known as a very vocal and at times unrealistic 'Maroon Mafia' happy. Maybe a better word is content.

Names that have been going through the mill as his successors are current assistants Tony Love and Chad Tackett.

Love is a long time staffer and also the schools Wrestling coach, which is fitting considering how much like Nikita Koloff the man looks. He has turned down head coaching offers at other schools in the past to stay at Blazer.

Tackett was the former head coach at Fairview, who led the original revival and resurgence of the football program down in 'The Wood.

Then, there are those lighting up local message boards, or so we have been told, with the name of Luke Salmons, the current HC at Cabell-Midland.

However, If the last basketball hire is any indication, it would suggest Ashland will look outside what's currently there.

Love seems to be the sentimental favorite with current and former Tomcats, and Chad Tackett has apparently made it clear he wants the job, but what assistant isn't going to want the HC job at their current school if available?

Dark horse: Lee Evans, long time Vic Marsh assistant who was groomed for the position that Hart got years ago, and had a very unremarkable stint in Cannonsburg as head man of Boyd County.

It was not made clear to us why Hart is stepping aside, so I'm sure we are going to endure some lies and garbage in regards to the situation.

Leon Hart was a pretty good fit for the Tomcats, they didn't lose ground and they even beat Ironton a couple of times. They will probably wish he hasn't left during next season's first day of practice with pads. Lord knows they'll be watching.
