Boyd also loses Head Coach

We had just posted a few hours ago about Leon Hart and his decision to step down as head coach at Blazer. Now, we had just been informed that not only will the Tomcats be looking for a new coach, but so will their rival across town, Boyd County.

1st year Head Coach Ray Brooks will not make it to a second season in Cannonsburg, Brooks cited the illness of his mother for his reason to step down as Head Coach.

Ray Brooks was hired before last season by the Lions from Huntington High School, where he was a Defensive Coordinator for the Highlanders. Brooks got the Lions to turn things around to being respectable on the gridiron again after a few seasons of being the low man on the totem pole in area circles.

Boyd County was the first head coaching position for Brooks, which given the length of time he had been coaching, raised some concerns with his hire to right the ship out in the County. Marty Moore had been rumored to be a possible hiring target before it was announced that Brooks was to be offered the position.

And more intrigue to the dual coaching searches has come to light. Some have indicated that current Ashland  assistant, and a man whom has been called the sentimental favorite of current and former players at Blazer to be the new head coach there, Tony Love, is already being touted from these sources as the target for Boyd to take the helm.

It truly would be an odd occurrence for Love to accept the head coaching position at his current schools' biggest rival, but some truly feel as if it within the realm of possibility, even going as far as saying it was 'a given' that it would happen.

Reminiscent of Vic and Scott Marsh, and Lee Evans defection to the Scarlet and White years ago.

Another strong possibility is that Boyd will stay in house, and hire a person very entrenched with it's football history. Former star player and assistant coach, as well as current Assistant Superintendent Mark Meenach's son , Ryan. Ryan is currently an assistant at Boyd, and was a standout for the Lions defensively while a student at  Boyd, and went on to play at Morehead State, and also served as a graduate assistant at Morehead after graduation.

And of course, there is going to be a number of people who are going to be pushing for BC Athletic Director Trimble to go after Marty Moore this time around.

Or, like Ashland, Boyd could go totally against the grain and bring somebody in that is not on the short list of the locals.

One thing is certain, next fall should be very interesting for the two rivals as the season kicks off.

Both are going to have new looks, not by choice, but by necessity. And, to be quite honest, I think this is going to be more benefit to The County than it will be for the Tomcats.

*UPDATE* We have learned from several parents involved with the Boyd County football program, that two current members of the program have applied for the position: Assistants Terry and Frazier. Frazier came to BC during the Dane Damron era, and has remained there through Evans and now Brooks.

Frazier played his high school ball at Russell for Ivan McGlone.
