Maybe the most prominent 'Son of Marshall' is coming back home. He is doing so to say good-bye.
Hal Greer is coming back to the city of his birth, and for which he is also a boulevard(Yes, all those years of going to the Wild Dawg you were on this man's turf and may not have known it), to say hello and good-bye to Veteran's Memorial. It was announced today that Greer, along with other former Thundering Herd dignitaries, is going to be on hand for the ceremonies which will officially shut the doors for good on the old building.
Greer is considered, and was recognized as such, one of the NBA's 50 Greatest Players. Greer, born and raised in Huntington, played for Douglass High School in Huntington, and went on to an outstanding college career at Marshall.
Greer was drafted into the NBA by the Syracuse Nationals, and later moved with the team when they became the Philadelphia 76ers. While a Sixer, Greer was teammates with Wilt Chamberlain, and the two led the Philadelphia franchise to the NBA title in 1967, that ended the Bill Russell led Celtics' 8 year run on top.
Greer was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in 1982. While at Marshall, he was the first black American to be issued a scholarship for basketball, and was a 2 time All-Conference selection(57,58) and was also a Conference MVP(58). Greer was also given honorable mention as an All-American during his senior campaign in 1958.
As a pro, he scored over 20,000 career points, and had one game scoring 50 points(Against Boston). He played in 10 All-Star Games, and was the game's MVP in 1968. He also set the record at one point for most points scored in a single quarter for the All-Star Game. He is also noted as playing in more games as a Sixer than any other player in franchise history. He also led his team in scoring in 1967, with 22 ppg, in route to winning the championship.
Greer has his jersey retired at both Marshall and with the 76ers.
The 'Field House Finale' as it is being called, will include honoring past members of the Thundering Herd who played in the days when the VMFH was home to the Herd, and an Alumni game. They will also have a salute to the veterans of the United States, and will close up the event with a silent auction for various artifacts from the Field House.
The event starts at 7:00 PM on February 10th at the Field House.
