-A's send Guillermo Moscoso and Josh Outman to Rockies for Seth Smith. Two rotation fillers seems like a steep price for a career 4th OF. The last couple of years fantasy prognosticators have drueled in hopes he becomes a everyday play but the inability to hit lefties makes that a pipe dream in my opinion. With the depth in the OF combined with extreme splits, Smith is nothing more than a late round flyer in deep mixed. However his best value is in daily leagues if facing a RHP. Moscoso and Outman add two more Colorado arms that should be avoided when building a Championship caliber team. Neither arm will overpower hitters and both lean heavy on the Fly Ball outs. Stream at your own risk.
- Rockies send Kevin Slowey to Indians for Zach Putnam. A casualty of the aforemntioned deal. Slowey will return to the AL Central and will get a built in fantasy boost with the move out of Coors Field. Slowley won't overpower you but he has good control which certainly helps aid in his biggest problem, serving up four baggers. Certainly a reclemation project that could return dividens late in the draft in deeper mixed. The words Zach Putnam should not be uttered at any moment on draft day.
- Rockies sign Jamie Moyer to Minor League Deal. Really don't know why I would mention Jamie Moyer other than a salute to 40+ year old who won't hang'em up.
Moyer will mentor the young Rockie arms and well pack his bag before final cuts are made.
- Red Sox sign Vincente Padilla to Minor League Deal. Grasping for straws I suppose. Padilla has a more realistic shot at making the club. With recent success and experience out of the pen. Padilla could serve as added rotation depth/blowout inning relief but make no mistake he should not find a home on your roster at any point.
- A's sign Jonny Gomes. Seth Smith meet your right handed hitting platoon partner. Gomes offers a good clubhouse presence and a .877 career OPS vs. RH. While you don't care about your teams chemistry you should monitor Gomes in daily leagues just not on draft day.
- Rangers sign Yu Darvish. The top pitcher on the market by most experts. I suppose the unknown is just more intruging then what you do. Could I be overly skeptical when it comes to import pitchers, perhaps, but it seems as we have taken the transcripts from Dice K's arrival and inserted Yu Darvish. Point is Nomo started this trend and quite frankly he has been the only pitcher with anything resembling a track record. Darvish will certainly have his moments but I'm projecting a mid 4 ERA with more poor outings then gems. Fine for a 25th round selection Darvish will be nabbed up 15 rounds early. The biggest fantasy fallback from this move could be the placement of Feliz back into the pen. As of the moment Feliz will be stretched to start but should the Spring not go as planned the rotation depth will make the move back to tempting.
- Hello Roberto Hernandez goodbye Fausto Carmona. The name change will not make him more diserable it just makes avoiding him a little more difficult. Just remember the former 30+ SV Roberto Hernandez is not making a comeback.
- Carlos Pena returns to Tampa. Rays fans have become accustomed to picking from the Free Agent scrap heap. While Pena won't win a MVP he does play excellent 1B and will hit 25+ HR and provide much needed pop to the Rays lineup. The move does however squash the 0.5% chance the Rays would make a run for Prince Fielder.
- Red Sox send Marco Scutaro to Rockies for Clayton Mortenson. Scutaro doesn't do anything to excite you but at seasons end he will have double digit HR's a respectable average and solid run production totals at a week position. The move to Coors certainly should help his numbers across the board. Scutaro will move to 2B and will likely take away from Eric Young Jr. chance of finding a Opening Day spot on the roster. Mortenson provides rotation depth/swingman, i.e. good enough for a MLB roster not good enough for the Farmdale Firebirds. The departure of Scutaro means that Jose Iglesias will have a shot at SS with a solid spring. Should he fail Mike Aviles and Nick Punto anyone?
- D'Backs sign Joe Saunders. Suanders will take a spot at the back end of the rotation and will be a frequent Add/Drop in all formats. Streaming specialist if you will. The addition of Saunders will leave Collmenter and Barry Enright in a battle for the 5th spot come spring.
