Here is some 'water-cooler' talk around the region:
- Morgan County hopes to ride the coat-tails of it's 'Eastern Kentucky Bloc'. Jagos Lasic is a 6'9'' exchange student from Serbia who garnering a lot of attention for the usually anemic Cougars. Those who have seen the big man play, have marveled at his skill and ability, and the tag 'D1 Prospect' has been thrown about in his regards. According to Greenup Coach Jim Youngman, "he is the real deal." The never penciled in 'Cougs could place in the top two in their district earning them the un-familiar trip to Ellis T. Johnson Arena. The Ashland-area will get a chance to see Lasic tonight, as Morgan County come to Russell to take on the Red Devils at 7:30.
- Behind Adam Wing and D.J. Townsend, and the emerging 6'9'' junior Matt Brown, The Rowan County Vikings still seem to have a grip on the 61st District. Many expected the Panthers of Fleming County to give the defending Region champs, and Sweet 16 Runner-up, a little bit of a fight for the District, and possibly taking Region glory. Thus far, the 'Vikes seem to be content with continuing the pillaging of that neck of the woods.
-The Football Rivalry gets all the press, but Blazer and Ironton put on a show last week at Anderson Gym that was worthy of diverting both school's attention towards the hardwood. The Tigers and Tomcats clawed back and forth at one another all night long, both taking turns at making runs and exciting the crowd. The cat-fight was finally put to rest with Ironton's Trevor White's bucket. Some miscues and what was not the preferred shot of Ashland Coach Buddy Biggs, and Ironton escaped back to their side of the Ohio River, with a 68-69 victory.
-One thing that is for certain when you face the re-building Boyd County Lions, is that you are going to have to play hard. What the current Lions may lack in skill and execution, they make up for with their gritty play and never give-up-ness. BC was able to avenge an earlier loss to Greenup County over the weekend, led by Brandon Lowe's 23 points in front of the home crowd in Summit, 53-43. Like we said, the win avenged an earlier loss, which was a 20 point blow-out, to the Musketeers in the Whitaker Bank Fort Harrod Classic.Another telling stat from this encounter was that Boyd shot 31 free-throws compared to the 8 shots from the line for Greenup County.
-West Carter may take the prize for the most unlikely win of the season. On the Varsity level, you usually don't find yourselves on the winning end of a ball game when you connect on just 10 of your 38 attempts from the field. The Comets, however, did just that. And, it was against their cross-county rival East to boot. Defense was the key for the Comets in this one, as they dropped into a zone defense that was able to hold the Raiders from putting it in the hoop for the final 5 minutes of the game. It was a very ugly game. East guard Connor Robinson also had a scary moment when he was jolted as he ran into a screen set by a West player. Robinson, who did lay motionless for a period of time after the contact, was sent to Our Lady Of Bellefonte Hospital for observation. We hope everything is alright with the youngster.
-Also, don't forget that Corey Gregg and the Tomcats will be heading to The Joe B. Hall Classic at the end of the month in Mount Sterling. You can find a primer for the event with a little back round info on the Classic from an earlier posting we put on the site. Ashland will be paired up with Braxton Beverly and the Perry County Central Commodores.
-Switching gears to football to close up shop this week: Still no word out of Cannonsburg yet as to who will be the new Head Coach of the football program. We have heard some of the names who have applied for the position, and there are some applicants who would make for a very good hire. We still can't help but to think that the school may have pulled the trigger too soon on Coach Evans, though.
