A Head's up on the 'Head
Morehead State is missing the NCAA's all-time rebounding leader this season. When the beast known as Kenneth Faried walked out of our eastern Kentucky lives and to the NBA, last season's improbable run in the tournament(including beating that one team, you know), looked as if it would be years before the Eagles could repeat such a feat.
When they were drummed by a suspect West Virginia team earlier this season, those fears looked to become reality. However, Donnie Tyndall is a capable coach, and he still can get his birds to flock together.
The Eagles got a win over another tourney team from last season, when they beat Princeton in Pennsylvania as part of the TicketCity Legends Classic. The Eagles won that contest primarily due to their defensive play, 68-56,however Princeton is not the team who was tournament worthy a year ago. At the time, the loss knocked them to a 1-5 record.
The Head, unfortunately would fall to Bucknell in night two of the Classic. Bucknell was the host of the event.
Morehead it seems can't quite get the right mix of making things happen and intensity, thus far. Tyndall, has though, beefed up the schedule. Morehead is doing the all the right things to build their program. They are playing a higher level of talent than in previous years, and are not being circled as a cake-walk. Now all they have to do, is put it all together and start winning some of these games.
It looks as if however, they have a long road to go. Morehead has simply not been able to make it close in the games it has taken on with some of the larger programs, who have had success in March. Morehead has dropped all of it's 'big' games, and the scores of which show that they are simply not to that level yet. Of the loses, NC State, WVU, College of Charleston, and Kent State have all won handily. Averaging about a 20 point loss each time they took the floor. The Bucknell loss, was the closest, which was only 4 points.
The list of their wins, are far from impressive. They did beat Princeton by 12 on a neutral floor, but this is not a good Princeton team. Remember, they were dominated by a bad WVU squad. They also hold wins over Asbury College, West Alabama, and now the Winston Bennett led Mid-Continent Cougars. Nothing against those teams, but none of which are D1 schools, and West 'Bama played the Eagles tightly.
The most recent of the wins came today over Mid-Continent in Morehead, 83-57. Sadly, many in attendance may be returning to the mind-set of going just to see Winston Bennett, and not supporting the Eagles. Morehead is a fickle college town, and this is the classic case of 'what have you done for me lately'.
Morehead has a lot of work to do before they can even hope to resemble a team that has the potential to make a run at March and capture the state's attention for at least a whole day. The OVC crown is not completely out of reach, but I wouldn't expect it to return to the Ellis T. Johnson trophy case this season.
Oh well, we will always have the Louisville game, and the resulting billboard campaign, to help us remember the glory days of Morehead Basketball.
