The 64/60 Sports Fantasy Spin On The Hot Stove

Transactions

* Dodgers sign Mark Ellis on a two year deal. I suppose defense is a premium these days. That is the only way I could rationalize giving Mark Ellis nearly 2 Million more per year than Jamey Carrol who is the better offensive player of the two by a wide margin. Ellis will be the primary 2B for the Dodgers. who's limited offensive arsenal only becomes more limited. Expect a empty .270 hitter with no power or speed.

* Tigers resign Geral Laird. Likely not a player on your radar come March and April. Laird will be the backup to Avilla and will get the customary two starts per week. What the signing of Laird does effect is Victor Martinez's C eligibility moving forward. Look for 2012 to be the last time Martinez can be plugged in behind the dish.

* Twins sign Ryan Doumit. Likely won't be considered a starter but with the ability to C as well as play OF look for Doumit to get 4-5 starts per week. If Doumit is assured of this playing time he certainly makes for a nice 2nd Catcher target for cheap come draft night.

* Phillies acquire Ty Wigginton from Rockies for PTBNL or cash considerations. Given the age of Polanco, injury history of Chase Utley, and the potential vacancy in LF Wigginton could see some significant playing time in 2012. Known for his power Wiggington will likely not hit north of .275 but he does give you 20-30 HR potential as well as roster flexibility. Before the start of Spring look for the Phillies to add another bat somewhere that will likely limit Wigginton's role with the team. Should Wigginton be the starter heading into the season he would certainly earn your attention come draft day.
