There they stand. Like the last two kids left to be picked for Kickball. WVU and Louisville. With the Big East imploding around them, and going the way of the Dodo bird, Both schools are in def- con 3. They are scrambling, trying to find anyway to sell their programs to BCS conferences, and thus far, it has been a tough sell.
Louisville and WVU both had been mentioned as candidates for BIG 12 refurbishing, but it was WVU, the stronger of the 2 football wise, they got the nod and left Louisville out in the cold, with table scraps of the Big East or going to a non-BCS conference. No matter how moronic it seems logistically to have WVU play the traditional mid-west and Texas schools in conference play.
But as former 'Ville coach Lee Corso would say, 'Not so fast, my friend!'
Apparently Mitch McConnell whispered those sentiments into BIG 12 officials ears, too.
The Kentucky senator has been tagged by various sources, as pushing Louisville to BIG 12 officials as the next member, and to disregard WVU. Who wants those repugnant couch burning SOB's anyways?
Now, I find it repulsive with the shape of the country right now, that an elected official on that level would attempt to intervene on something like college athletics instead of dealing with more important legislative duties. But, that is the world we live in. The American Dream has turned into an Asiatic- Coma.
WV senator Joe Manchin(future president, folks) voiced a displeasure with the notion that Mitch would run this type of game to keep WVU out, and WV political leader Shelly Moore-Capito also made her grievances known in regards to to such acts as rumored.
WVU had been given an official invite and was expected to be announced as such as early as today. however, that was 24 hours ago. Enter McConnel and his stumping for the Dirty Birds, exit the spot that was to be occupied by the 'Eers.
WVU and Louisville both have had request from the Big 12 to submit more information to the conference in regards to potential membership. Right now, it's a numbers game. The superconferences of 16 teams is on the horizon, but for for now, all the BCS leagues are easing into it. Bottom line, they aren't ready to take that next step, and for the Big 12, they have to get back to being 12 schools strong, and attempt not to lose anymore.
My take: Louisville will probably look more attractive to the Big 12 now than WVU, for political reasons and for logistics. WVU is going to be the odd man out, but I think needs to take this new opportunity to really put together a package that is desirable to the SEC and get noticed there, but I still like them to join the ACC, it's a better fit as far as logistics and fellow member schools. In a ideal scenario, ACC would add WVU and lose Clemson to the SEC.
But, as of now, one of the two programs is dangerously close to having to join the conglomerate of Conference USA and The Mountain West, which could lose this year's BCS buster Houston to the Re-stocking Big 12. And in joining the conglomerate, there is the risk that the BCS still does not reward the association with a BCS birth, as both conference are non-BCS leagues. They are trying to come together and force the BCS' hand. It is yet to be seen if it will work.
regardless of what happens, shits getting burned in Morgantown.
Just for shits, Louisville plays WVU on Nov. 5th in Morgantown.
