It only took 2 and a half centuries to get it right

Now, they are finally 'Golden Domers'.
Notre Dame unveiled the helmets that they will sport from now on, and they shine brighter than ever. ND had began a process of trying to find a way to get the gold on their helmets right. The gold on top never quite matched the intended vision. Over the years with the materials of the protective gear changing, it was hard to get the color exactly right.not to mention it' hard to duplicate the look they were going for on a hard plastic shell. In more recent times, it didn't help that players wear different models of helmets instead of a uniform one. With the different materials used by various manufacturers, the paint would dry differently on the different helmets. So, not only would they not look like the envisioned shells, a lot of times they wouldn't even match
The new process of painting with the special particle method certainly does give the helmets the proper look, as now it matches the dome for which they took inspiration from initially.
However, with progress, something has to die. That which is put to rest is the tradition of the student managers painting the helmets before each game. The school noted that to get this beautiful look, it would no longer be feasible to use student managers to do so, it was way out of their scope of practice.
Notre Dame will debut the new helmets on Saturday, against USC.
