64/60 Sports Top 25

Much is being made regarding College Football's realignment and rightfully so. The College Football landscape that us 30 somethings have grown up with will be non-existent in two years. It appears as though the Big East and Big 12 won't be so big anymore and College Football will be composed of four conferences and everybody else. Many feel this will negatively effect college football as we know it. Gone will be many of the regional rivalries that we as fans have come to enjoy. Many feel this merger will only widen the gap between the AQ schools and those Non-AQ. Both are valid points but consider me willing to embrace the new frontier. Sure we may lose the Backyard Brawl and various battles over various Jugs, Cups, Shoes or what have you but we will still have the Red River Shootout and The Battle of Bedlam and we gained semi-annual matchups of Duke vs. Syracuse and Duke vs. UConn in football. What more could you ask for? The increased number of conference teams would figure to increase the number of conference games putting a limit to how many Furman's or Montana States can be on the schedule which is certainly a plus for College Football fans. Less non-conference games certainly make it more difficult for Non-AQ schools to build their program however for those that are established it could make a path to the BCS and possibly National Title Games somewhat easier. Of course this could be positive or a negative depending on how you feel about those Non-AQ schools. Of course it's quite possible we could be overreacting to the potential fallout of these decisions. Remember how Miami and Florida State were supposed to dominate the ACC? With the fluid pace of these changes the projected conference allignment of today may look very different in two years leaving us with only one less major conference than we currently have which you could argue is the same as the Big 8 and SWC merging to form the Big 12 back in the day. In the end it's all alot of noise for a College Football fan such as myself. The games will still be played on Saturday, the regular season will be the best in sports, and who plays for the National Title will be decided by a computer and that alright by me.

So, let me get this straight... BCS supporters lay claim that the bowl games are part of college football's very essence and should be favored til' the death over a playoff system, yet getting rid of rivalries, which is THE ESSENCE of college football is ok?

And.... let us not forget that this also affects the basketball side of major college sports too.
