Allistair Overeem begged and pleaded to the promoters. It worked. His upcoming bout with Todd Duffee will be for the 'Interim' DREAM heavyweight belt.
Now, this fight will have nothing to do with Dusty Rhodes, nor will it be contested for the big gold boot he used to lug around after he would win the Bunkhouse Stampede, although it would be a lot cooler if it was.were?was? who cares.
MMA promotions the world over are throwing the term 'interim' championship around like the NCAA throws around 'Coach in waiting'. It makes not sense. I digress. And, I really don't understand why DREAM is even using this tag.
Overeem gets what he wants. His match is for the title on New Year's Eve. The heavyweight encounter is part of a DREAM event that has some very good match-ups on it's slate, and could be worth checking out.
The division it's self has never been at the forefront of the fledgling combat sports promotion, but after the 31st, they will have championships filled from Featherweight to Heavyweight. Overeem just wanted a title fight on the card. He didn't care who it was against. Which, works to his advantage as he should win this encounter rather favorably.
Duffee is coming off a loss to Mike Russow in UFC. The maneuvering of gaining opposition for Overeem caused a hang up for another group, Titan FC, as they had Duffee booked on their January 28th show against Abe Wagner. The MAINE-IAC Tim Sylvia, former UFC Heavyweight Champion, will now be the replacement fighter on the Titan FC show taking on Wagner.
Titan Fighting CEO Joe Kelly thinks that the unique situation has caused a unique opportunity for the promotion. They see it as a win-win for them. They let Duffee take the fight on the DREAM show, they get to work with Sylvia, and still get to book Duffee's services on a later show.
