However, the moves it was going to make paled in comparison...
They want to add schools as football-only members, which is going to pose a problem with those schools who would be offered spots...as they conference they are currently in would probably not let them remain as members for Basketball or Baseball, etc., And let's face it, to do all that shuffle, the Big East is simply not that attractive a league to go through all the added misery just to join...
Villanova, like another Big East member UConn, was a basketball member while the Football Program was an FCS program(former 1-AA). UConn stepped up and actually has done well in the big boy land of college football, Wins over Notre Dame(last season) and WVU last week, have shown that the Huskies were ready to move up and outgrew their brethren in FCS. Nova, has displayed similar qualities, and should by all accounts be a BCS program...and they soon will be, as they are the most likely to accept the bid for the Big East as it makes the most sense to do so, at the very least from a continuity standpoint.
They also offered TCU, and Central Florida...It would be a horrible move for TCU to join any conference short of the BIG 12 or SEC .... I'm sorry, but WVU and Pitt are not enough to carry you to credibility as running mates with the stacked conferences out there...They would be able to accomplish just as much in the Mountain West as they would in the Big East from that standpoint... And Central Florida may be a decent fit in the Big East, but a hang up could exist with another Florida school, Southern Florida... The Bulls could 'bull' up and block the addition... why I would not understand, but it is a real possibility..
And the Big East is not even adding enough teams to have a conference title game...So what's the point in adding any program beyond Nova if you are not going to have at least 12?
However, it is good that the Big East is being proactive and trying to expand, because the Super Conference Era is coming... and before you know it, the SEC, BIG 10 and Pac 10 along with whatever schools Texas and Oklahoma want to give their rub to and call it the Big 12 is going to all but swallow up the BCS... and it's going to be even slimmer pickens' for the likes of those on the outside of this, even more so than it is now... If Boise State and others of the like think it's rough getting respect from the all knowing computer now, it's ain't going to get any easier once this format takes shape... and like I said, It WILL happen...
