The Nightmare was more like an unwanted dream... If you could have seen the 1st half of play, as presented by the Scarlett and WHite, you would have wondered what in the hell was going on...and I know that the Putnam Faithful were unsettled to say the least.
Boyd County came out on the opening kick off and caused a fumble, they were stoped on 4 and out inthe red zone, but turned that around and caused another fumble, this time making good on getting to the endzone...early 7-0 lead County. I was stunned...Ashland scored, and you could just feel the smugness as the Maroon Mafia felt it was only the precursor to a very bad blow-out...But, the Lions still had fight... and Eli Malloy ran a kickoff back to about the 6... setting up another BC score... Halftime BC was only down one score and they had even managed to break up a two point conversion... I knew it would not last, but for one fleeting moment heading into the tunnel at half-time, the Young, and Inexperienced Lions felt like a football team...They felt like they could play with the Cats...and for that half, they did...
This game may very well be the catylist that brings BC back from the depths... In this one night they showed that they now understood how to play with fire, how to play with pride, and they never gave up... The Final score tallied about a 3 trips to the endzone win for Ashland...But BC didn't rollover and play dead like they would have a few weeks ago... They finished the game with pride and integrity...And for this team, this program, as to where they are....It was more important to do that than to have gotten that 3 point win over East...
The Support was not there for the Lions...The Crowds of yesteryear would have dwarfed the attendence tonight. In game that used to be standing room only, Ashland filled their side, while Apparently, the citens from Cannonsburg decided that supporting thier team would take a backseat to Phoenix theaters or watching DVR'd episodes of DWTS or Glee... They missed a bunch of young , rag tag teenage kids become a team tonight...That is what happened... they came together...And for the first time, they had each other's backs...the rest of the county had long sinced left them for dead...All they have is each other now...And for the looks of things this evening...BC is on the rise...
A competitive first half, flaring tempers, a near bench clearing brawl, an ejection, and what lil' student section BCHS supplied was all into it...Hell's far the County didn't even send the BAND!!!!! These kids need support...and because a bunch of Middle-aged never were's seem to think that they were better and that the program is an embarassment, they don't get it...
The ejection occured when a BC player litteraly spine-bustered an Ashand player onto one of the endzone hills...That also led to the near brawl...This led to the BC crowd and team rallying behind their schoolmate and getting fired up... this led to some pretty big hits from Boyd's D...See kids...It's a trickle down effect...and enthusiasm is contageous...
Yes, for that ever breath and fleeting moment in time, it was like Doc Brown fired up the flux copacitor and took us to a place where we don't need any roads...
Alas, The Scarlett ran out of gas...They had left everything they had on the field at Putnam Stadium...and for once, They have nothing at all to be ashamed of...They finally played to their potential for this season...and that is a milestone in the resurgance of their program... Kinda fitting that the Lions decided to attempt their comeback from the dead on Halloween..And I am telling you... Don't look now, but Here somes the Scarlett and White...BC may very well be on their way back to respectability...
Ok, enough at my attempt to put a positive and over-dramatic spin on the game...Here are a few other noted that made this game interesting to annals of history....
It is going to be the last game ever played in Putnam Stadium as it currently stands... The lst vestiges of the old WPA funded stadium are going to be demolished and a pratically new facility is going to be raised on the location.. New player ammenities, a new press box, and a whole new seating structure is to be started on in mere days after tonight...The stadium will be enclosed with a complete Horeshoe seating arrangment as well as a brick wall which will run in the far endzone about 15 feet high that will enclose the rest of the stadium...See, another feeting footnote to say that BC football was reborn on the day that Putnum was finally taken down(the original structures anyways)...
It is also interesting to note that this game marked the last game ever to be played in the confines of the original structure known as Putnam Stadium...Ashland will be on the road every week of the playoffs...So, once more, fitting that last game in it's original and current state was contested by BC and Ashland...
Dickie Martin will also no longer have to hang out every night of the week and drink himself into oblivion in that old ragged press box...They are going to give Dickie his own lay-z-boy and mini-fridge that will be nesteld away in a sub-terranian level that is very secerative which is to be constructed with the new re-model...
Oprah Winfrey is going to take the refuse materials from the old structures and build an orphanage/school in Zaire...
Ashland also has it expressly written into being that will continue to completely rip-off every thing school spirit wise from Kentucky....Since when does a Tomcat, which is just a horny male cat that sleeps on trash can lids, ROAR??? Apparently, Dirk and Dick seem to believe this to be true as they have the UK roar played on every first down, just like UK does(It should sound more like a hiss or I dunna, a MEOW.).. they even have a 2nd tomcat mascot that is named scratch...just like Kentucky...
This just in .... Ashland attempts to have an original idea... Due to the social uproar over this and the fact that Ashland will no longer plagerize anything UK does, the city sinks into the Ohio River...Where Ironton scores on them again...

Gilbert,
This was downright fantastic.
Thanks,
Jesse
We need to invest in a 64/60 camera for Idge to take to these games.
I'm in for $20.
