College Football News and Notes

* As painful as the Michigan loss last week this weeks sit back at MSU will cause me to toss and turn for several days. The Irish are a better team this year but the issues are still the same. Good offense bad defense. The experts can scream lack of speed lack of speed. The speed may not be there I haven't used my stop watch but the biggest issues are bad angles to the ball and missed tackling. If you can't execute these that lack of speed doesn't matter.

* The win over the Irish may have been too exciting for Mark Dantonio he suffered a heart attack early Sunday morning and will be out indefinitely. Perhaps this is payback from Touchdown Jesus.

* The most impressive win this week may have been Alabama's 45+ pt romping of Duke. Yes it is Duke but College Football is played by 18-22 year olds who often play on emotions. Last week Bama played a Top 20 team in Penn State at Home at Night in a nationally televised contest. Next week they play their first SEC game against a highly ranked Arkansas team. This week was their first road game of the season and though Duke is a middle of the ACC team at best, David Cutcliffe has plenty of experience with SEC football and Nick Saban. This was a ultimate "sandwich contest", but not for Bama.

* Those fans of Nebraska football from the mid 90's better hitch a ride with this squad. Taylor Martinez is a dual threat QB in the mold of a Eric Crouch but a much better passer, and the Defense has been worthy of the "Blackshirt' moniker. This Nebraska squad may not run the option like the squads of the 90's but this could be the year they return to the top of the Big 12.

* Yes I have just praised the Nebraska defense so part of Jake Locker's 4-20 1 TD, 2INT performance can be contributed to the competition but is this guy a Franchise signal caller? Locker reminds me of JP Losman formerly of the Bills. I remember during Losman's senior year at Tulane everyone praised his arm strength, accuracy, build, size, and footwork. Yet every time I watched Tulane football which was quite often, hey I had issues with gambling, Losman was simply a average college QB. His best games would come against the Conference USA schools but in Non-conference games he would shrivel up like a prune. Losman ended up a first rd pick and is now out of the NFL I believe. Locker may have a better career than Losman but it just amazes me that proven big time winners such as Colt McCoy are taken in the later rounds and may never be given the oppurtunity to compete for a strating job.

* Texas, Oklahoma and Florida are carbon copies of each other. All are extremely talented, all are young and unproven and still trying to get their legs. After a impressive week last against FSU last week Oklahoma barely edged Air Force at home. Though Florida did beat the Vols on the road by double digits they have still yet to look impressive. Texas did get a big road win against in state rival Tech yet Gilbert threw three pick's and they have still not found any resemblance of a running game. All of these squads will be better in November then they are now but will any of them be able to mask their issues until then?

* Big win for Arizona in the dessert. With the late start time to their advantage Arizona dominated Iowa in the first half and simply held on in the end. First I would like to state that the Pac 10 isn't the best conference in the country in fact they may not be the second best but with Arizona, Oregon and Stanford lighting up the scoreboard every week if your a offensive kind of guy it's the conference for you. Should USC find itself I could easily see all four of these teams with 9 or more wins which would certainly help their case in conference ranking conversations.

* Heading into the year I thought 2010 could be the year of the Non-BCS schools. Boise St and TCU were legit National Title Contenders and many of the traditional powerhouses had more question marks than usual coming into the year. Though the BCFP Top 25 isn't recognized nationally, it is still worth noting that four Non-BCS schools are in the Top 25 including 2 in the top 6. The four Non-BCS schools are four more than the number of Big East schools and three more than the ACC.
