Two homegrown, Huntington boys met on the court tonight in the NBA, as Patrick Patterson, Mr. Black Kool-Aid, and The Houston Rockets, visited fellow Texans, and former teammate(we won't call them childhood friends) OJ Mayo and the Dallas Mavericks.
On this night, Mayo and company would walk off into the East Texas sunset with a 105-100 victory. Patterson logged 23 minutes for the Rockets, and he put up 9 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. He made his only 3 point attempt of the night as well.
Mayo, by far had the prettier in the sport pages stat-line for certain. The Juice Monster, poured in 18 points in about 33 minutes on the floor. Mayo is finally getting the time and shots on the floor to shine, something he was not getting while in Memphis. Thanks to his move to Dallas, the OJ Mayo we just knew was going to make a huge impact on the NBA way back when we first saw him as a 6th grader at Rose Hill, may finally be a tangible thing. Not just something in our minds that we thought we would never end up seeing.
Hopefully, the circus has indeed left town.
Mayo also edged his former WV State Champion teammate's rebound production on the night, as he pulled down 6. He also tabulated 8 assists and had 2 steals, and even recorded a block. Mayo went 3-14 from the field, and recorded the majority of his points, despite his sub-par shooting from the floor, from the foul line, going 12-13 from the line. He struggled as mentioned from the floor a little, also not connecting on any of his 3 attempts from behind the arc.
The NBA offered a little local flavor tonight with the meeting of these two teams, and once more Patterson and Mayo shared the same floor, albeit on opposite sides. To be honest, I think one of them really likes it better that way. Not mentioning any names though.
