Over the weekend, the 25th Annual Bass Pro Shops Tournament of Champions was held in it's familiar setting of Springfield, Missouri and Kentucky's future was on hand as part of the talented field. If you've ever been to Outdoor World, you know all about the big fish tanks and the angling demonstrations that they put on. They just catch and catch like it was nothing. Well, in their hoops tournament, D1 coaches can cast and catch outstanding players in the field in the same manner.
Derek Willis and his Chargers from Bullitt East played for 5th place on Saturday afternoon, beating hometown team Hillcrest in OT 59-55 (also gaining a measure of revenge against the state). Willis Had 22 points, and collected 8 rebounds in the OT win, without committing a single foul. Fellow McD's nominee, Rusty Troutman added 12 points, but was 0-5 from behind the arc. Let's not forget Trey Rakes, yup Junebug's boy, who hit another late second shot to propel Bullitt East to the win (you may remember his last one, ESPN Top Play),
as his jumper touched through with 19 seconds left in the extra period. The Chargers battled back from being down by as much as 15 in the 3rd quarter.
Bullitt also had a win against Hall High (Little Rock, AR), 68-58 on Day Two of the tournament. In that one, Willis had 19 pts, 9 reb, and 6 ast. Troutman added 14, and did not miss a single attempt from the field all game, his only miss was a gimme' from the line. Elliot Young led the Chargers in that contest with 20 points.
Arkansas signee Bobby Portis of Hall, finished with 18 points and 8 rebounds in the losing effort for the Warriors from Little Rock.
Day One was where Bullitt East got a slow start in the event. They dropped the opener for their weekend 62-53 to Nixia High (Missouri). Willis led Bullitt with 17 and 8 in that one, with Troutman adding 15 points and 5 boards, while Rakes put up 11 points.
The more saliva inducing of the Kentcuky signees, Dakari Johnson and his Monteverde Academy Lions made it to the finals of the event, where they would ultimately succumb to Paul VI (Fairfax,VA) 67-69 in another OT thriller. Dakari played hard, but watched the final ticks from the bench, as he fouled out after collecting 12 points and 10 rebounds. Paul VI finally put the Lions away, when Kevin Dorsey hit a jumper that left 3 seconds on the clock in the extra period. Johnson's teammate, and future Florida Gator, Kasey Hill had 18 points in the losing effort on 7-16 shooting and 2-5 from the 3-point line. The un-committed D'Angleo Russell of Montverde led the Lions with 20 points and yanked down 8 rebounds.
2015 recruit, with offers from seemingly everybody,
Franklin Howard led Paul VI and all scorers in the game with 24 points, besting fellow VI'er Marcus Derrickson, who had 23. Marcus is also in the 2015 class, and has received several offers as well, was named the Bass Pro Tournament MVP. Derrickson put together a terrific body of work over the weekend.
