Ole' 45 Calling It Like I See It

Suprise.....Brett Favre returns to the Vikings. As I stated on this site last week Brett Favre isn't going anywhere. The Vikings are simply too good to walk away from after falling just short last season. Coming off his best year in about a decade no way was Favre going to hang it up to be the QB's coach Hattiesburg High. Favre has stated that this season will be his last and for reason's unknown I believe him. The whole Favreapalloza that takes place every offseason makes me ill and taints my image of #4. However once he puts on the pads I once again find myself rooting for the guy. Year after year after year after year.

Tony Dungy prefers Dove 2-1 or the next leading brand. Tony Dungy criticizes Rex Ryan for his potty mouth. Dungy stated that the type of language Ryan uses provides no benfit to his team or players and feels that Roger Godell should discipline for foul language. Statements such as these make me wonder what in the hell did Tony F'n Dungy do to deserve all his praise. For 6 years in Tampa he had the best D in the NFL and in Indy he was given perhaps the best QB of all time. Last time I checked Dungy has one Super Bowl to his credit. Perhaps had Tony dropped a F bomb here and one over there upon occasion his troops would have been more motivated. Learn the fucking playbook or get the fuck out sounds much more threatning than "If you don't learn the playbook I may be forced to go in another direction." Tony go save Maurice Clarett and leave cursing for those who choose to express themselves.

Tim Tebow injures rib on TD run as time expired. The headline is merely a cover-up. Tebow actually donated his rib to provide shelter to the homeless and food to the needy. A Tebow rib will go for 25K on the open market.

With White Sox fade the AL Races all but over. The East is simply a two team race with Rays and Yanks fighting over position. Twins have the Central and Rangers in the West. With the better overall balance in pitching I like the Rays to win the Division but the Yankees will be a tougher out come playoff time. Don't sleep on the Rangers. Lee has been known as a Yankee killer for quite sometime while CJ Wilson has been dominate at times during the season. I could see the Rangers as a serious threat though the talent level form 1-30 isn't even close.

Sweet Home of the #1 Ranking. Alabama takes the number one spot in the Preseason AP poll recieving 54 of the 60 first place votes. Ohio St. 3, Boise St. 1, Texas 1 and Oklahoma 1 also recieved some top nods. No big discrepancies between the AP and Coaches poll other than USC being placed in the 14th spot in the AP(USC under their probation cannot recieve votes in the Coaches Poll). The SEC as always has the most Top 25 teams with 6. The Big 12 has three teams in the Top 10 with Texas, Oklahoma and Nebraska who despite a 10-4 mark last year come into the season at #8. The 64/60 will post their Top 25 Preaseason Poll on Friday.

Meanwhile the NL is a Eqaual Oppurtunity Employeer. The Padres have distanced themselves over the Giants within the last week and now have a 6 game lead even without wearing the Cammo (to the best of my knowledge). In the Central the Redlegs and all the years of experience have built up a a good size lead over the Cardinals who sure seem like they could use a bat (as I stated a few weeks ago). In the East it's a two team race between the Braves and Phillies. I like the Braves and the Phillies to both capture a spot in October. The Cardinals will make a push simply because of Wainwright and Carpenter but unless Matt Holliday is able to hit better than .375 they won't have enough offense. I may be in the minority but I actually prefer the Padres over the Giants for the final spot. The Padres have 5 very solid options and the bullpen can shut the door down after the 6th.

Braves obtain D. Lee from Cubs for three minor leaguers. The Braves needed a bat and Lee is simply the best option not named Adam Dunn. Lee at this stage is likely better than Chipper by a slight margin and a huge improvement over Glaus. Lee will move Glaus to third and he will likely share the duties with Infante. From a Cubs standpoint this was simply a money saving deal for the remainder of the seaon and hopes that one of the three prospects become effective major leaguers.

Roger Clemens could be wearing a different type of pinstripes in the somewhat near future. Clemens continues to state that he has done no wrong and all indications are that a plea deal that inluded no jail time for his confession was rejected. Typically atheletes have no worries when it comes to this type of thing but given the subject of steroids I could really see Congress going after a significant player such as Clemens to set a precedent for those who may follow.

Lou Piniella retires after Sunday's loss to the Braves. I can't blame Piniella for walking away from the 2010 Cubs. I watch them on two to three occasions each week and it makes me naueseated. Pinella states family matters as the reason for his early departure. I wonder if the Cubs were in a dogfight for the division title if Piniella would be leaving just the same. Piniella leaves the game as a potential Hall Of Fame MGR. Piniella has one title to his credit but turned Seattle into a perenial winner and was the first Cubs MGR to post back to back playoff teams since the early 1900's. Piniella's theatrical nature likely has more to do with his legendary status than his on the field resume as a MGR. Regardless Piniella managed to win over 52% of his games and should have some reserved space in Cooperstown. On the field the Cubs decide to place 3B coach Mike Quade as the interim coach for the remainder of the season. This decision leads me to believe that Sandberg isn't the first choice to manage the Cubs next season. If so Sandberg could have been appointed the job now to gain some MLB experience for the 2011 campaign. This also could indicate that Alan Trammell may not be a contender as was rumored once Piniella announced that this would be his final season. My guess is that Joe Girardi is the guy they want although I can't fathom anyone walking away from the Yankees. I could also see the Cubs shoot for Joe Torre but I can't see Torre taking on a rebuilding team in a high pressure market. Unless Joe Girardi's wife threatens divorce, as she is a Chicagoian, Ryne Sandberg will be the main man in Chicago for the 2011 season.

45 Questions on Life. Is it a law that all vehichles in strip joints must be backed in? Is it just me or are 85% of Volkswagon Jetta drivers hot? There should be requriements that need be meet before using a hyphenated name. Anyone who makes under 500K need not apply.

Weekly Trivia: Last week I would like to thank Jesse Ward and Todd Whitley for participating in the contest. Jesse Ward correctly named all six players who are active with over 2500 hits. The answer: Ivan Rodriguez 2787, Omar Vizquel 2762, Alex Rodriguez 2529, Garret Anderson 2529, Manny Ramirez 2553, and Johnny Damon 2528.

Weekly Trivia: For those of you who watched ESPN any throughout the day on Sunday this will be a easy one. Three MGR's have over 1500 Hits and 1500 Wins in their playing and managing career respectively. Can you name them?
