After moronic things such as week 0 and two weeks worth of Saturday Night games, High School football is nesting and becoming exactly what it was thought to be...or is it?
Crow... Thats what they are serving up, and that is what we are going to munch on... Greenup County is for real. Opening night, the retarded week zero, Greenup County came out and nearly stunned Ashland in the opener, The Cats had to come back in the third quarter to take the lead and eventual win. "Eh, Ashland had an off night..." That was the thinking, ignoring that just maybe Greenup County wasn't who we thought they were...Saturday Night in the "Backyard Brawl", Greenup decided to shed the preconceptions and show us all who they REALLY ARE. And, that is a team that, albeit a young, Russell wanted no part of. In what has become severely lopsided in recent years, Greenup County struck a huge blow to The preppy Elitist from the land of Beemers and Catholic Hospitals. The Musketeers dominated the Red Devils from begining to end and dealt them a 28-6 loss. When asked after the game, assistant coach Dave Caniff only said this, " We was Daaaayy-udd"....
Ashland had their way with Raceland at Putnam. It was nasty. I was not at the game first hand, but I know this to be fact. I was working in the ER that evening and needed to look no further than the amount of Raceland Ramblers that were signing in for bangs and bruises...One player who made the visit even said, "It was pretty bad." Hell, even the fucking Raceland band was sending in people to be checked out. And Ashland was not even spear-headed by My pre-season all world mention Trent Hardy. Ashland appears to be just as dangerous as I originally thought, Thanks in part to how they dismantled Raceland(44-7) and Greenup County's coming out party tonight...Ashland was like a kid with a new GI Joe Mobile Commans Base Playset, they wanted to show off everything it can do. And they did just that. All guns were fired and all missles were launched. This does not bode well for the Scarlet and White on Halloween week on Elm Street this year....or does it?
Boyd County, a very young Boyd County, was showed up by Raceland last week, and tonight, they dropped a game they led up until the third quarter to Pike Central in the Pike County Bowl, the WYMT Pike County Bowl that is. Now, I was not expecting much from BC, I rarely do, but these kids played with alot of heart and they don't quit. They will lay down for nobody, and they trully play til' the whistle blows. The defense was great tonight for the County, the offense had some miscues and two timely turnovers that led to the 16-7 loss. But you are going to have growing pains when you starting QB is a sophomore and you are very dependent on his classmates from the 10th grade to anchor your team. They are going to continue to get better as the season goes along, and these boys are already tough and play with alot of grit. I hate to say it, but Mr. Catlettsburg himself really likes these Lion Cubs this season... Circle October 29th for the Ashalnd game, by that time, these kids are going to suprise alot of people in Putnam... That's right, it's going to be a dog fight...and while I can not guarentee an upset...by nights end, BC will have their pride and dignity firmly in-tact...
The Out of towners have paid of for Fairview. After barely escaping West Carter in week zero (sigh), the Eagles played to the delight of the Westwood crowd, and another kid I had mention in the preview Chris Kimbro, made a big INT and helped secure the V for the Birds. But the big story here was Coach Nate McPeek decided it was going to be Jared Hutchinson's showcase night. He rushed for 3 TD's and caught another 1.The First play of the game was an opening kick-off return for 6 by Gary Felder With all those people congregated in the 'Wood on friday night, the area crime rate was at an all time low from 7 to 10..It would be interesting to see how many calls the BCSD went on after the game let out... The Eagles completely out classed Bracken County 49-12..But seriously, how serious can you take a High School program in Kentucky that is called the Polar Bears?
One More factoid from The County aspect... I was listening to the game on X107.1, and for fuck's sake BC has the absolute WORST radio team in the history of time.
In what was obviously the game of the week, from the Buckeye State, Ironton narely edged out rival Wheelersburg thanks to big stops being up only 5 with minutes to go, The Tigers beat the Pirates for the 15th time out of 20 meetings, and gave Bob Lutz his 365th career DUBYA, with the 12-7 win.. I wonder how many Tiger's fans decided to eat Dick's Pizza before the game? I know of at least two, but they probably had to keep one eye on the slice and the other on their back side...Wait a minute, that only happens in Ironton...
Some other scores that I took a particular interest in... In what could be the coolest name in Eastern KY schools the Blackcats of Prestonsburg, home of Mrs. Trivette, blanked Paintsville 63 to 7 in The Apple City...Somewhere, in a dark room, Bill Mike Runyon is holding a picture of John Pelphrey, and he is crying...
And just for my own personal satisfacion, Knott County Central was dismantled by Lewis County 57-12.
It is also the time of year for the Bowl Games....At the end of the posting, there will be scores of all the Bowl Action, however, as I am writing, some scores are not yet available. Also just b/c it will make this post obnoxiously long, I am posting EVERY SCORE from the weekend....
Next week, Idge is getting out on Friday Night to take in some lights. I won't be visiting the familiar haunts of Putnam or T.Scott, instead I am heading to Henry R Evans and watch Ironton completely fuck Russell's shit up... I have heard for the better part of a year, ever since last season's embarassment of the Devils by the TIgers that Russell was going to win big... It won't matter how many bridges Ironton will have to cross.. They win big in this one...
