Marshall jams the Cam, blasts Iona

The Iona Gaels came in to today's game as the nation's leader in points per game. However, on this day, it would be Marshall who had the scoreboard lighting up. Fans at the Henderson Center were treated today to  The Thundering Herd defeat the Iona Gaels 82-63, and improving to 6-2 on the season.
The game was at a feverish pitch in the first half, with Marshall going into the half leading 42-40, behind shooting 53% from the field. Iona went into the locker rooms shooting 57%. But the 2nd half would be a different story.

Mike Glover had 16 for the Gaels at the half, but Marshall was able to shut him down in the 2nd half, and the scoring threat on the nation's leading scoring team finished the game with 20.  DeAndre Kane recorded 5 steals for the Herd and added 19 points. Damier Pitts had yet another double-digit scoring game as he poured in 25 points to add to 5 assists and only 4 turnovers. Pitts has now scored in double-digits in all of The Herds games except one. It was also his highest output of the season.
Dennis Tinnon continues to own the boards, as he contributed another 11 today for the number eight rebounding club in the land. And, the highly touted freshman, Justin Coleman, added 11 points, which is now his new career high.
Nigel Spikes also showed he may be on the mend in a positive way, as he gave 18 solid minutes of  play and helped the cause with pulling down 7 boards of his own.

So, it turns out that Marshall was able to play more of their game. Coming into the contest holding teams to roughly 50 points per game, as opposed to Iona, who had been blistering the nets putting up nearly 90 per game.

Now, Marshall is a run and shoot team, and thus far, they haven't shown to do the later part of that description all that well. However, Marshall did control the pace and tempo of the game, and forced Iona to play into their game plan. Iona didn't take the ball inside and attack the basket as they should have, but Marshall does have a good presence inside the paint, and as noted, are a tenacious rebounding team.

Some seem to think that the high point output by the Gaels, can be attributed to them being a flashy, non-disciplined street ball team, and that until today, no one had played them tight and put pressure on them. Marshall did that today, and some say it exposed Iona for what they really are.

regardless of whether Iona is a one-trick pony does not matter much at this point. It was a good win for Marshall, who has shown thus far that it would not be wise to nap on the Herd heading into March.

Marshall's next game is at home against High Point Saturday evening.
