Well, it was a night to catch The BUZZ...And I'm not talking about left handers, nor I am talking about Dave 'Buzz' Baker, although he played a part in the BUZZ... Yep, I am referring to that very audible, yet strangley soothing 'buzz' in the background of the Big Blue Network TV Broadcasts... That buzz, as irritating as it is, was a welcome change of listening than some of the other noise we have heard for the past few weeks... If I have to hear a guy who is a citizen of FLORIDA and is running for senate in WEST BY GOD, say rubber stamp one more time, I may get rid of cable tv. And the nusance that is twitter should just be taken away from UK all together, first we had Randall-gate, now, Jorts has been told to not tweet by Coach Cal until he can 'handle' the privelage in a responsible, mature manner. Then , you have Donald Russell's mother doing her best Mrs. Patterson and airing dirty program laundry on Cat's Pause message boards, then going and giving an interview of sorts to Larry Vaught just in case something would not have made it on the record..."This is not Operation Win for us" was one of her more poignant sound-bytes...However, There is some truth to that statement... This season has turned into a disaster in a matter of weeks for the football cats, but IF we can still salvage a Bowl-eligble record and beat Spurrier and Tennessee in the same season, well, it is an astounding success from where I sit... Derrick Locke, who has been cleared to play saturday, even suggested that instead of bashing Hartline, maybe the bashers should try jumping off a cliff first... Alot of muck and mire in the commonwealth this past week...And, as if that is not enough, Rand Paul and the Ultra-Racist Tea Party goons are still on TV every hour... And I am sorry bro, it wasn't the camera angle that made shoving a womens face into concrete with your foot that made it look worse than it 'really' was...WWF uses such ploys, not the evening news...well, not all the time...Ok FOX NEWS routinely does it...
But, We have to put all that behind us and prepare for the Rupp Arena return of the prodigal, well, ok, just a former player...Landon Slone...and his new team, the Pikeville Bears... a very capable NAIA program...Headed by coach Kelly Wells, a former stand-out at Mason County(State Champion his Senior Year) and Morehead State during the Dick Fick era in Rowan County...And yes, when I was 12 I got him to sign a MSU program for me...No, I don't have it....
So, it's tip off, and rather than have SLone fall flat on his face, Wells benched him for the start of the game, Slone would see plenty of action against his former team however. Within the first 15 seconds of the game, Kyle Macy made a very astute(sarcasim) observation by saying that Kentucky was wearing new uniforms tongiht, and then proceded to describe them to the TV VIEWERS...They however were not NEW, and Macy even took the time later in the game to recant his previous blunder.. He delivered some awkward statement trying to make a joke about what he previously said...And poor Quincy Hankins-Cole...The Hyphenated one for Pikeville was very productive, but the announce team just could nail down that hyphen pronunciation... Macy, thankfully did not make the attempt at it...And you know there was 15 thousand Whitaker Bank references and terrible commercial spots during the broadcast...
As for the Cats, well we came out with no depth,a small line-up, and very un-enthused and flat, exactly the way Me and Butch go out on the S-Curve when we play the Floodwall Gang of 4th and 5th graders...We had 10 turnovers in the 1st half, and we have go to get fould shots under control...and unfortunately, the NC A Double still has Enes in bondage...It was close and back and forth at the start, and Pikeville even had the lead...But you could tell by our spurts and mini-runs that this was going to be a great oppurtunity for some teaching by coach Cal and that we would not be in danger of a VMI or Gardner Webb repeat..So, You go into coast mode and look for signs of what we can expect once the season is in full swing...Everything pointed to Brandon Knight eventually playing up to his hype and Terrence Jones is going to be as volitile as Cuz...DeAndre Liggins is going to do everything for us, and Darius Miller is not going to have the luxury of being hesitant and shy this season... And Darius broke out the 'Floater', which Dave Baker was kind enough to tell us was his 'signature' move...And we had 4 early turnovers compared to 0 of Pikeville, and another very desturbing factoid was the amount of second-chance put backs that Pikeville was getting...And everybody's favorite should-be weather man Rob Bromley was doing his sideline schtick and spotted former Governor Paul Patton, who is now the President of Pikeville College..The former Gov' was wearing a beautiful Orange blazer and tie combo, but re-iterated the fact the HE WAS A KENTUCKY FAN...Small schools in the commonwealth have school spirit, but even that takes a backseat to the Loyalty you have to the Empire...So, as I watched a mostly sloppy game the rest of the way through, and mini-runs and needless mistakes by Kentucky, the victory came about in the manner as was expected, with the in-state school giving it their all while our Cats played foolish and half-assed as they cruised to the victory, more or less anyways.. I had even entertained the thought of listening to Tom Leech's radio broadcast with the TV on mute...but I came to a happy middle and just turned the TV down...
Pikeville should make plenty of noise in the NAIA, and they could be a legit mid-major in division 1...Kentucky won't be Kentucky until about January, so we are going to have to cringe through some growing pains until we get to, what I think is going to be a solid Elite 8 team this season..
well, Dave Baker, it looks as if the Cats were able to 'Solve the riddle that is the Pikeville Bears.'
Election day tomorrow, just please don't vote for Rand Paul...
And, although not a Kobe Fan by no means, the recent 'What should I do?' campaign of Nike/Lebron James only makes me COMPLETELY LOATHE Labron James, Cal connection or not....
