Fantasy Fundamentals From The Factory: Minor League Overview
Everyone wants to get their hands on the next big thing. Most superstar prospects don't live up to the values that Fantasy Oweners put on them. Regardless of this there is something cool about having that rookie sensation. I took a look at some of the various Top 50 Prospect list heading into the season and focused on those players who really have a shot at a roster spot sometime in 2010. I took a look at their Minor League numbers thus far to see how they have fared and looked at the teams rosters to see when their arrival can be expected. Please Note no sense in wasting time evaluating when Strasburg will make his bebut. He will be up it's just a matter of when. The same can be said for Chapman. So here are the Catchers and Pitchers that are among the Top 50 Prospects in the game. Friday we will take a look at the position players.
C- Jesus Montero Yankees- Montero is thought to be the best in a great crop of young Catchers. Stat Line: .230 AVG, .689 OPS, 3 HR, 14 Runs, 19 RBI, 0 SB in 122 AB. Given Montero's struggles thus far and the success Cervalli has had nothing more than a September call up should be expected.
C- Carlos Santana- May not be the all around Catcher that Montero is projected to be but offensively he has been compared to a Victor Martinez type who may often DH or play the 3. Stat Line: .320 AVG, 1.048 OPS, 9 HR, 25 Runs, 37 RBI, 3 SB in 128 AB. Perhaps the most impressive stat is his 28 BB to 25 K. Santana will appear soon after the June 1st Service Deadline.
C- Buster Posey- Most thought Posey would be the Giants everyday C to start the season but the Giants decided to resign Molina which prompted the Minor League return of Posey. Stat Line: .338 AVG, .970 OPS, 5HR, 26 Runs, 26 RBI, 1 SB in 142 AB. Posey is also a low K high BB guy posting a 22:26 BB/K mark. Posey has been rumored to be on his way up on a daily basis. Given the Giants offensive struggles the sooner the better. Posey will likely play somewhere other than Catcher for the better part of the season.
P- Jeremy Hellickson- The higest rated pitching prospect not named Strasburg. Stat Line: 3.24 ERA, 9.9 K/9, 1.26 WHIP in 50 IP, K:BB rate 55:11. It is simply about finding him a spot. Barring injury Hellickson will likely be a September promotion that would move a Ray starter to the bullpen and slot Hellickson into the rotation for the playoff run.
P- Martin Perez- Another good young arm in the Rangers farm system. Stat Line: 3.34 ERA, 9.41 K/9, 1.55 WHIP in 29 and 2/3 IP. K:BB rate 31:17. Another September call up. Perez will likely be the Neftali Feliz of 2010. They will likely use Perez as a 7th or 8th inning guy for 2010 then he will be moved to the rotation for 2011.
P- Kyle Drabek- The centerpiece of the Roy Halladay trade to Philadelphia. Stat Line: 3.06 ERA, 8.62 K/9, 1.32 WHIP in 47 IP. K:BB rate 45:21. If Drabek were in Triple A I could see a promotion sometime soon but given that Drabek is still in Double AA a September Call Up seems more logical.
P- Madison Bumgarner- Another projected starter for the Giants heading into the Spring. Unlike Posey, Bumgarner pitched his way out of a rotation spot. There were concerns regarding Bumgarner's drop in velocity which prompted the move to Triple A. In Bumgarner's first two minor league outings he was pounded. In 5 Starts since he has been dominate only giving up more than a run in 1 outing. Stat Line: 3.64 ERA, 6.86 K/9, 1.33 WHIP in 42 IP. K:BB rate 32:13. Given Todd Wellmeyer's struggles at the 5th spot in the rotation Bumgarner will recieve plenty of consideration for a June promotion.
P- Christian Friedrich- One of the many good young arms in the Rockies organization. Stat Line: 2.61 ERA, 10.01 K/9, 1.26 WHIP in 20.2 IP of Double A baseball. K:BB rate of 23:8. With the call up and success of Chacin and the return of Francis and Hammel, Friedrich could still be a year away from a MLB call up. Best case scenario Friedrich gets a September cameo this season.
