You Down With ADP?

Average Draft Position of ADP is a tool that many fantasy players swear by. ADP is simply where a certain player is being drafted. ADP gives you a good indication as to where you should target that "sleeper" of yours or if a player would still be availablle the next time you pick. One owner at the NFBC used only his ADP sheet while drafting. ADP's are a very helpful tool if used properly. Many sites offer ADP. Yahoo for example has ADP listings for all players however they use the results from Mock Drafts to determine the players ADP. For those of you who have never done a Mock Draft, the are as exciting as Zach Shavers singing Karokee on a Saturday Night. Participants usually pick about 3 players and then Auto-Pick the rest of the way therefore the ADP of players is nearly identical as the sites Player Rankings. Prior to last weeks NFBC draft the NFBC sent all owners the ADP based on actual drafts taken place over the last two weeks. The ADP was based on roughly 20 drafts composed of people willing to throw down big money and dedicate a fair amount of time for research therefore this particular set of ADP's are a good barometer of what type of value a player was or wasn't according to their draft spot.

I compared the ADP of players according to the NFBC list with those selections in the 64/60 draft to determine what team had the most value per player. Before I give you the results I would like to explain the process. I first selected the top 15 selection instead of the entire roster. My thought process with this is over the last 3rd of any draft you are picking more based on need or personal feelings than on best overall pick. If you have 0 pitchers and need 10 then you will select 10 pitchers regardless of what hitters are available. Also if you have high hopes for say Garrett Atkins then you want that player. Would Atkins be available in Rd. 24 instead of 22 perhaps but as long as Atkins performs to what you expect you will have no regrets. Now should you select Atkins 4th Rd. even if he performs beyond your expectations you will still be kicking yourself.

The process went as followed: if you chose a player with the 5th pick and his ADP was 8 you scored -3Pts. Negative points are bad thus Positive Points are the goal. Teams are ranked by points and the best and worst selections are featured. The numbers are only reflective of the first 15 rds. of the draft.

1. Arguemntative 9irons-Rich Coleman. +354. Simply dominated the draft. Only one selection had a negative number and that was Chase Utley with -1. Best pick Michael Bourn +74. Worst Pick Utley -1.

2. BC Dingers-Chris Lee. +170. He stated the Mother Fucker Can Draft and according to ADP he is correct. Only three players scored in the negative. Best Hunter Pence +44. Worst Pick Rickie Weeks -45.

3. Prestige Worldwide-Todd Whitley. +124. Only two negative performers and one is returning from injury. Best Pick-Posada +33. Worst Pick Beltran -24.

4. Ohio River Carp-Bill Fenney. +56 The last of the positve teams. Best Pick-Morgan +39. Worst Pick-Francisco Liriano -42.

5. Tude Smackers- Jesse Ward. -34. Best Pick-Jose Lopez +76 Best Value Selection of the Draft. Worst Pick-Rafael Furcal -90.

6. Bear Creek FP Factory-Josh Coleman. -37. Best Pick-Nolasco +33. Worst Pick Zambrano -29.

7. B'Ville Stars-Mike McClung. -89. Best Pick-Billy Wagner +35. Worst Pick-J.J. Hardy -51.

8. Hell and Damnation-Ashley Coleman/Danielle McCormill. -118. Best Pick- Torii Hunter +39. Worst Pick Mark DeRosa -57.

9. Hendo Colonels-Dave Hobson. -162. Best Pick-Johnathan Broxton +27. Worst Pick Wandy Rodriguez -61.

10. Rubber Duckies-Tim Davidson. -396. Best Pick Gordon Beckham +61. Worst Pick Joba Chamberlain -112.

11. Maccabi Hebrewers-Josh Gilbert. -462. Best Pick Andrew McCutchen +41. Worst Pick Carlos Santana -160.

12. LeMaestro's 41129ers-Butch Lemaster/James Hardy. -820. That wasn't a typo. It is simply the cost of shaking it up. Best Pick Justin Verlander +7. Worst Pick Alberto Callaspo -184.
