Rubbin One Off and Coming Right At You: My Thoughts On the Week In Sports

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday and I apologize for my delay this week. I am sure thousands of followers spent all day on Cyber Monday hitting Refresh and waiting on my post. Thankfully Idge gave them something to look at during my absence. Mr. Gilbert I just want you to know that your posting's are absolutely wonderful and although we may not always see eye to eye I respect your passion. We both know that to be a big boy program you must have the "One and Done Talent" and you my friend have just that. One little sidebar before I get to the post. During my debate with Mr. Lemaster when I refereed to the Syracuse squad lead by Anthony he alluded to the additional talent on that squad. Please inform him that the same additional talent minus the said "One and Done" was ousted in the first round by Vermont the following year.

In a suprising move Notre Dame fired Charlie Weis on Sunday. "No One and I Mean No One, comes into are house and pushes us around" other than Navy twice, UConn, Syracuse, USC and others. Weis can claim ownership to the worst three year stretch record wise in Notre Dame history. I was a huge Weis fan during the winning seasons and for the most part supported him over the last two season but to go 6-6 with this team is pathetic and Weis's fate was deserved.

Who will ultimately replace Weis is anyones guess virtually every coach has already been linked to the job. As a fan of the program I hope Notre Dame does one of two things when filling the position. Either hire a huge name i.e: Bob Stoops, Urban Meyer, Jon Gruden, Butch Davis, etc. or hire a up and coming defensive minded coach such as Will Muschamp, Charlie Strong or Gary Patterson. The most likely canidate currently is Brian Kelley who is the only name that has been mentioned that I would not be pleased with. It has nothing to do with Mr. Kelley himself I am sure he is a wonderful person and he has Cincinnati on the verge of a undefeated season and back to back Big East Title, I don't feel his Spread Pass Happy Offense fits well with the current state of Notre Dame. Notre Dame hasn't been able to consistently recruit top notch talent on the defensive side of the ball thus the offense over the last few years has been much better than the defense. With that in mind the pass happy offense of Kelley would not control the clock meaning more time for the Notre Dame defense to be on the field. And once again the program would be looking at to many 35-30 games and if you constantly play in tight contest you will eventually lose some of them.

Bobby Bowden officially retired or forced out however you want to look at it. Florida State said the legend was alloweed to return but basically as a University Represenative that had a sideline ticket during the football games. The Bowden case brings up a very difficult dilema. Do you let the legend go out on his terms or does action need to be taken when the program begins to slip. In a perfect world Bowden would have gave it up about 3 years ago after a couple of down years but he hung around simply to long. Jimbo Fisher has already been named the successor (I don't exactly know what he has done to deserve it) and with the retiring of Andrews and certain changes in the coaching staff it is better that Fisher finds his guys than Bowden having any say in the matter. Bowdens greatness is undeniable. His 14 consecutive Top 5 finishes in the AP poll will never be topped again. Two National Titles and the man can really pull off the straw hat with class. Fortunately for us Bowden will certainly continue to be honored in those wonderful All State ads.

The college football season couldn't have been scripted any better than it has played out this year. The ACC, SEC and Big 12 have their usual Championship this week and the SEC title Game is a National Semifinal. But as luck would have it both the Pac 10 and Big East who don't have a Conference Championship have their top two teams battling this week with the winner getting the BCS birth.

In the boneheaded move of the season Carlos Dunlap a top Defensive Lineman for Florida celebrated a little to hard on Sunday and was busted for a DUI. Dunlap has been suspended indefenietely and will miss the SEC Championship. Florida is extremely talented on the defensive side of the ball but you figure Florida is going to see a steady dose of Mark Ingram on Saturday.

The Heisman hunt is as deep and undecided as I can ever remember at this point in the season. No one has a perfect resume. Tebow, McCoy,and Ingram play on the best teams but have been Non-Existent at times this season. Gearhart and Spiller have the numbers but Stanford nor Clemson don't seem to have enough of a following to win the vote. I would vote for McCoy as a lifetime achievement award. Tebow already has one and McCoy has better numbers. However other than Spiller I can see any of the other four taking home the hardware.

The Colts and Saints both stand at 11-0 on the season and talks of not one but two undefeated teams are in full force. I don't know if both or either team will run the table during the regular season but what will utlimately end the Colts perfect record is their inability to run the football. It is shocking to me how many good football teams cannot run the football. The Eagles, Patriots, Chargers, Cardinals and Colts all lead their divisions but not a one of these teams can consistently gain 4 yards per carry. Come playoff time I really like teams that can run the football and control the clock. Therefore I really like the chances of the Saints and Vikings in the NFC.

Correct me if I am wrong but didn't Pete Carrol get irate a couple of weeks ago when Jim Harbaugh ran up the score on the Trojans? Pete you got some explaining to do.....
