6460 Draft Recap 2012

In part 2 of a 587 part series that Burt and I are putting together...We are going to discuss the back end of the draft. The part of the draft where people have given up and retreated to the safety of their homes, reached a level of drunkeness that no longer allows them to focus on something as simple as what sport we're even drafting for, or is randomly shouting out names to just get the 6-hour marathon completed.

There is a good chance that these picks will not ultimately effect your season's success...But it can! And with the league moving to a "Keeper League", these picks can be that much more valuable as everyone goes prospecting.

*****Who was the winner of the last 5 rounds of the Draft?*****

BOPP- Everett, can proudly raise his hand in glory as Simple Minds', "Don't You (Forget About Me)" plays in the background. Heavy, finished his draft with 4 of 5 picks being guys that could anchor a team within the next few years. Randall Delgado, Trevor Bauer and Dylan Bundy are all possible 2-3 starters with the potential to be more. Of course their impact could be limited this year, but if Ev can hang onto these guys for the year and beyond, they could pay high dividends......Combine those three with super prospect Mike Trout, who was "The Next Big Thing", before Bryce Harper came along, and Butch could own this league by 2014.

JBC- I understand the affection toward Ev's late round selection but before we hand over the crown allow me to object. First and foremost let's not forget this is Ev Lemaster who would drop his unborn son for any 4-5 day with 2HR's. The man searches the Waiver Wire like Andrew Clark networked pics on ICQ. So the chances of any of these players remaining on this roster for a month are minimal, all season long, forget about it. Secondly lets put this prospects back in there place. Trout was a no brainer selection and I'm bitter I missed him. Bauer has only 25 minor league innings under his belt so it's difficult at this time to label him can't miss. Dylan Bundy's rather pedestrian K rate and iffy control doesn't bold well pitching in the AL East and Randall Delgado could just as easily find himself in a late inning role as he could in the back end of the rotation. As for the 5th selection Kila Ka'aihue his more likely to be a late camp cut then in the Opening Day lineup. All told of the final 5 selections barring injury not a single one will exceed their draft spot this season and only Trout would be a keeper in a limited league such as the 64/60.
The true late round winner was the BCFP. While Roberts, Danks, and Niese won't give you the world I like all to produce numbers to warrant a roster spot. As for Viciedo and Beckham both will be Opening Day starters and both have had the top prospect label as recently as two seasons ago. While I have more hope for Viciedo both could provide numbers 15 rounds above their draft spot.

*****Who was the loser of the last 5 rounds of the Draft?*****

BOPP- The 9-Irons in my opinion finished just as poorly as they started strong. There is really nothing to say about the end of Sir Richard's draft as his vanishing act around this time drew the ire of his youngest and dearest sibling. With his final few picks left in the hands of a bitter, Lil Richard.....things quickly went South. Burt, began throwing out names of guys who are either only recognizable or relevant to their own individual families(and even that is questionable)......A very disappointing end to a draft that started so well for King Richard.

JBC- In a league with keepers I couldn't bring myself to once again fill GRC3's roster with late round studs like I have done year in and year out. Bill Fenney gets up at 3AM yet he stays until the last player is taken. Mike McClung year in and year out has a 6AM drive to the WV capital yet he stays until the whistle blows. For christ sake Brandon McClung has a 9:30PM bedtime yet he managed, though barely, to hang in there. No reason the former Champ can't do the same. While it goes without saying that Jerry Hairston Jr. isn't enough to carry the back end of the draft this award should go to someone who finished the marathon crawling across the line. The MROTA take the prize in my book. Sure outside of Manny all will likely be on the Opening Day roster but Marlon Byrd is what he is, Mike Leake's ceiling is a Number 3-4 starter, Nyjer Morgan has no upside and RA Dickey is either a genital disease or Streaming option on the Waiver Wire.
