While checking over some area hoops scores and stat lines, I came across Huntington High's. Now, this is not the same Huntington High that ran roughshod over WV Hoops, nor the one that was a nationally ranked power house.
That honor in Huntington, now belongs to Prep, but the Highlanders are still there.
Huntington recently capped a 4-game winning streak with a win over the Wildcats of Nitro, 70-54, at Huntington High.(they no longer are in demand for their games to be at Big Sandy, Veteran's, nor The Henderson Center). The Highlanders(7-7) were led by Toquan Hayes on this night, his 25 points led all scorers in the contest.
We don't mean to be down, or even sound like we are 'trashing' HHS, that is not the case. They started the season at 3-7, but were not getting blown out of any gyms. Taking on some of the higher ranked teams in the state, and only losing the games by the slimmest of margins(2 or 3 points). Their roster may not be full of players tagged 'next', but they are a very good team.
It's just as an outsider, you remember the 'Mayo Circus', and how dominate, locally and nationally, those Highlanders were. It's easy to think that it never happened at this Huntington school, and that it was Huntington Prep who had Mayo, Patterson, and the others.
But, it wasn't.
This Huntington team, may not be a Prep power, they may not have Mayo, Patterson, or any other ESPN U top 50 players, and they may not be packing arenas. However, they are plugging along in their new existence as just a regular team, a regular program, and that is all that matters.
They don't have to rule the nation, just the Mountain State. Everything else, will take care of itself.
The consolidated Huntington school may be far removed from the original Huntington High 'Pony Express', but Hayes believes that like those 'ponies', they can out-run anybody in the state of West Virginia.
I think we may enjoy watching them try the rest of the way.
Huntington, you're not alone though. Rose Hill had to adjust to life after Mayo, too.(And Jackson, Euton, etc,)
