2010 64/60 Football Draft Recap
We here at the Coleman household have three Christmas's or at least I do. Christmas itself along with both my football and baseball draft days. I usually will begin a countdown a minimum of two weeks prior to the event and on the eve of the events sleep is nearly impossible because of the excitement. The 2010 64/60 Football Draft may not have went to plan but at the end of the day I hope everyone enjoyed it I know I did. The mood around the event was a somber one. Fellow 64/60 Co-Founder was dealing with a family matter and was unable to attend. The same issue Christopher was dealing with also effected the moral of several owners who made the draft. I had ran all over the Tri-State area and came into the event frazzled and somewhat unprepared. No Butch Lemaster to shake it up. James Hardy left the highlighter at the house so from Rd. 3 on it was a ten player selection process with every pick. The word taken hasn't been used this much since Forrest Gump was in grade school. Dave Hobson and Jesse Ward went Midnight Express on the Commish questioning every decision made regarding the scoring. Tim Davidson didn't drink the Miester that has been setting in the freezer for 7 mos with his name on it. No big laughs and no looks of disgust from his wife or youngest son may be good for Tim, but I sure as hell enjoy it. Tim's son decided on a Colt McCoy jersey this season perhaps attempting to bait some fool into taking him. Nathaniel is still angered about the Peterson selection by another owner although the younger Davidson was sporting the 28 in purple. Dave smoked weed because Dave likes weed. Whitley and Gilbert put off there MMA fued per Ashley's request and none of the banter posted on this site was exchanged during the event. Todd was the lone post draft night-cap as Todd and I solved every burning question in the sports world one beer at a time. As always the elder statesmen of the league: Bill Fenney, Mike McClung and Richard Coleman remained quite. Only asked fantasy related questions and were strictly business. For the life of me I can't figure out how these guys can put up with us year after year. Like every draft I enjoyed every moment of the four hour event but as is with life we are all better when we are together.
Now on to business. As usual the draft went predictably unpredictable. If a study would come out on Yahoo analyzing ADP of players from drafts held across the country and you happen to notice that in some league Adrian Peterson went 6th that would be the 64/60. Heading into the draft debating between Michael Turner and Frank Gore needless to say I was rather happy walking out with AP. In most leagues over half of the players selected in the first three rounds are RB's in the 64/60 it comes in at 44%. In the first Rd., which typically would include at least 8 RB in a 12 team league, only six RB were selected. In place of these RB's teams elected to go with WR's to build their team around. In fact WR's were the position of choice throughout the early rounds. Twenty-Nine WR's were selected within the first 72 selections compared to only 21 RB's. It seems to me that the RB position has become so overated that it is now underated. James Hardy posted a nice comment to one of my post early last week which suggested that the two back system that most teams utilize has made the RB position to hit and miss to warrant early selections on RB's simply because it's a RB. I agree with James's point to a degree. RB's are very hit or miss. For every double digit scoring game Marion Barber has you will find a 3-5 point dud to match. However the bottom line is that RB's are putting up better numbers than they did just 5 years ago so I can't see how their value has decreased. And for every dual-back attack you will find a QB who utilizes three to four WR's. I would argue that the WR position is perhaps the most inconsistent position in your lineup from week to week. Even elite guys such as a Reggie Wayne or Larry Fitzgerald will have a two to three week stretch of single digit totals.
Another hot topic of the evening was K and Def selections. I am a owner who fells as though selecting a K or Def before the final two rounds is foolish. Yes I realize K's will score a significant amount of points throughout the season but the point differential from the best K and worst K is nothing in comparison to the top QB and the worst starting QB. Also consider that most teams will only keep one kicker during the year so just on a rankings standpoint I will give you the top Kicker and I'll take the 15th and won't lose much. Also if past history is any indication then penciling a K in for a certain number of points is foolish. Kicking FG is just as much about a teams offensive struggles in FG territory then it is about the talent of the K. The just pick a Kicker who plays for a good offense theory doensn't always work, just ask Adam Vinatieri owners last year. My Defensive arguement is somewhat similar to my stance on Kickers. Each week you have at least 15 teams available for the taking and it is a good possibility that one of the 15 will play some scrap heap of a offense such as the Browns, Bills or Rams. You take that New York Jets D I'll play the matchups. It's kind of like streaming in baseball you just don't have to get up as early.
I'm sure at some point before the season starts I'll produce some type of league preview but for now a quick draft recap for each team.
BC Fightin Amish- Johnson and Matthews were both first round selections in most mock drafts so his RB duo could be leagues best. QB's position isn't sexy but Eli is solid at times and Roethlisberger has this greasy hair old guy who hangs out at frat bars and takes advantage of young coed's feel to him. WR corps certainly has questions but if Martz can turn Chicago into a offensive force look out.
Tree Fiddy- Since half of the roster is suspended for the first four games or so it could be interesting to see how the Fiddy get out of the gate. Assuming the WR's stay out of trouble and actually return to the field this group can be really strong. McNabb is no longer a every week option but certainly isn't trash. Cannot afford a injury to MJD or Charles and needs Sproles, Brown or Tomlinson to be well above average.
Expansion Franchise- The yet to be named squad could be the fastest team in the league with Harvin, Hester, Jones, and Rice. Rice is a earner every week and I love the QB combo of Ryan and Kolb. Chad Ochocinco needs to be an elite guy or this WR corp could be a weakness.
steelerdomination- I assume they are named in tribute to the Steelers as opposed to some twisted sex game. Landed their number one rated player at four in Brees. I happen to like their RB's. Forte should be strong this season. White doesn't excite me but he does produce he will need to for this WR corp to be productive because the rest of the options offer plenty of potential but no guarantees.
12th Rd Kicker- Went Manning over Peterson which delighted me. I'm sure their is some bitterness towards Peterson from last year regardless you can't criticize selecting Peyton. Going with only three backs is a huge risk and having Maroney and Slaton as two of them is just asking for trouble. WR position has plenty of depth and some good talent.
BCFP- Was in utter disbelief when Adrian Peterson feel to me at 6. Feel as though I have the best stable of RB's in the league. Cutler was the QB I had targeted. Wanted a backup with upside and targeted Henne, Cassel and Stafford all went earlier than I had expected so I had to settle for Leinart. For the record I'm not thrilled. Only four WR in a three WR league is just dumb and asking for trouble.
Arguementative 9irons- Really like Turner this year even with the lack of Rec. Romo is another top notch player. Needs a consitent performer from Moreno, Spiller, McGahee or Washington. I like Jackson but no other mark it down double digit WR on the roster.
Bounty Hunters- Best stable of WR's in the league with two consistent performers in R. Moss and Wayne. Schaub is a elite level 16 starts a season player. RB is a huge concern Pierre Thomas could be a 25-30 touch player with Bell gone the Hunters will need Thomas or Stewart to be a true #1 to produce at the RB position.
Barboursville Stars- I would like to rescend my previous statement regarding stable or WR in reference to the Bounty Hunters. In terms of starters I would take Johnson, Boldin and Bryant over the Hunters trio of players. Don't know if Flacco is that 16 start QB just yet but Favre isn't a bad consolation prize. With all the attention paid to WR the RB corp is a wreck. Parker is done Jones is old and Ahmad though talented isn't a true #1. I would recommend sending Flacco or Favre to someone for a RB in return.
FV Slobber Knockers- People RB's aren't bad people. Despite everything you read in each and every Fantasy Publication RB's still score points. Yes it's nice to get a Fitzgerald and a Austin (if you are a buyer) but not when it makes my starting RB duo McCoy and Brandon Jacobs with only Ricky Williams and Benard Scott on the Bench. Two excellent TE would suggest that the Knockers may go with a two TE set on Sundays. I would be safe in saying that about .5% of Fantasy Teams go with the two TE sets another only in the 64/60 moment. Brady is elite and the WR corp is good.
Bo's Bad Asses- Somehow Jamison made it through 15 Rd's. It may have took everyone at the table to get him through but by god we are a family and that is what families do. Love Aaron Rodgers with his rushing ability he would be the lone QB I would consider with a first Rd. pick. Like Beanie Wells as long as the Cardinals can succesfully convert from a passing team into a running team. Barber and Grant are a good matchup combo. Love the WR trio of Smith, Owens and Mason about four years ago but not today. The Asses do have the best Special Teams in the league with the #1 D (9th RD) and #1 K(11th Rd). The Asses certainly have disregarded some of the "Fantasy Fundamentals From The Factory".
Cleavage Climbers- Like Frank Gore this season as he will be the number one option on offense and a legit 35 touch player every game. Jackson has as much talent as anyone but playing on the Rams has it's price. Jackson however slipped to the 2nd Rd and was another so overated he is underated player. Rivers and Palmer are a good duo which will provide solid numbers all season. Injuries have already ravaged the Milk Makers as Rice will be out for half the season while Tate is gone for the year. The Rice injury leaves the DDD's without a legit #1 guy in the passing game. The Postcards from Andrew Clark really need a huge season from Hightower, Nicks or Collie to solidify the offense.
