16th Region Report

Boyd County's goal for the remainder of this season: Be at or above .500.

They took a step in the right direction towards that goal in Summit last night(Thursday).

Boyd County came out hot, and stayed that way as they caught the Paintsville Tigers by the toe, and handed them a 75-54 loss.

The Lions shot 50% for the evening from the field, and was a very proficient 7 of 16 from the behind the three point line, led by the shooting of Jordan Blevins, who was perfect behind the arc in the first half.

Blevins finished with 21 points to lead the Lions. Gamble and Mayse added 11 and 14 , respectively.

Paintsville has struggled this year, totaling 5 wins and 15 loses, and featuring a starting line-up that tallies 3 8th graders in it's ranks. This edition of the Tigers are young, and not quite the force they once were during the Bill Mike Runyon regime, and haven't been for a while.

Boyd County stands at 10-13 on the season, and has 6 more times out on the season, to try to reach their goal of .500 ball.




West Carter Head Coach, Jeremy Webb, recorded his 100th Victory on Tuesday night in Flemingsburg.

The Comets allotted their coach the milestone win, in very dramatic fashion.

West Carter did their best it seemed to not walk out with the 'W', throwing away their 16 point lead of the  Panthers of Fleming County, but a lay-up with 7 seconds remaining by the Comets' Kyle Brown, gave the Comets the win, 61-60.

The victory was West's 20th of the season, and of course was Webb's 100th. Webb's record in Olive Hill now stands at 100-64 in his 5 1/2 years on the Comets' bench. The win also allowed Webb, and West, to record their 2nd 20 win season in 3 years. It's also Webb's 3rd such season during his tenure there.

Boyd's Bare-foot landing

On a night when coaches(and cheerleaders) were stripped down to going shoeless on the sidelines, Boyd County had to put their sneakers into over-drive to overcome Rose Hill in the second half on the court.

The first half, Boyd couldn't do enough to distance themselves from the Royals, even though there was an obvious size-advantage in the middle for the Scarlet and White.  Rose Hill even outscored the Lions 18-13 in the 2nd quarter, and Andrew Wilhoit hitting the free one's at the foul line knotted the game up at 29 going into the intermission. Wilhoit would finish with a game-high 24 points.

At the half, Coach Randy Anderson's feet may have been bare, but it was the inside of his players head's that he was most concerned with.

Whatever he decided to impress upon them in the locker room, worked.

BC came out and finally utilized their advantage on the inside, on the back of Jacob Mayse. After Mayse took over the middle, scoring 14 straight points, the Lions were finally able to give them self some breathing room at the end of the 3rd. The Lions didn't look back.

After finally mounting a lead in the 3rd, the Lions built on their 53-41 lead going into the 4th, to pick up a 71-53 win. Boyd County(9-13) used 9 players from their bench in the winning effort, compared to Rose Hill(1-22) only using, and really having access, to 6 total players for the game. Not saying that Boyd is all that deep, but when you can use 14 total players compared to 6, it's going to make a difference.  Brandon Lowe also contributed 14 to Lions' cause.

The Last Stand of the Vikings

It was Senior Night at Rowan County, and the seniors decided it was going to be their night in more ways than just the naming.

The 4 senior Vikings combined for 67 of the team total 75 points, to lead the Green and Gold past district rival Fleming County, 75-64. Rowan's DJ Townsend led all scorers with 27, and future Evansville Purple Ace, Adam Wing, scored 21 and pulled down 16 boards in the winning effort.  Senior Jason Egan had 14, and the other Phillip Hodge, added 5 to round out the Seniors' efforts on their last regular season home game as a Viking.

Fleming County has a lot of good young players and reason to look forward to the future in the land of neon, in particular looking towards Darrion Burns(2o points) and Troy Steward(13 points). The sophomores kept the Panthers on the prowl and into the game Monday night. Fleming got to within as little as 4 points, in as late as the 4th quarter. Travis Taylor also added 14 for Fleming.

Eagles' Terry gets his puppies off the bus

From what I gather, we missed a heck of a performance. Friday night, rivals Ashland and Fairview took center stage in Westwood for the 64th District's #1 seed. In the 3rd quarter, Eagle Mike Terry jumped right into the spotlight. Terry went a perfect 6 for 6 behind the 3 point line, even doing his best to cover all ends of the shooting spectrum, sinking the last of the 6 from about 30 feet out and banking it in off the glass. With that kind of shooting, you don't question if he called 'bank' or not.

That brought the Eagles within in 2 points, and brought out some defensive intensity from the Tomcats. That D, led to 10 Fairview turnovers in the 4th, and kept the Eagles grounded, not scoring again until there was only 23 seconds left in the ballgame. Ashland jumped out to a 60-49 lead in the 4th, and held on to take the #1 seed back inside city limits, 71-53.

Blazer's Cody Withrow had 25 points, leading the T-Cats, and also added 10 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals, in what was probably his best game in the Maroon and White. Withrow, will also remember this night for another reason: He reached the 1,000 point plateau. He joins Corey Gregg and Ryan Whetsel on that list for the Tomcats this season. The first time 3 Tomcats have reached that mark, since 1966.

Mike Terry, thanks to him completely losing his mind from behind the arc, also reached the 1,000 point mark n the season in the contest. Terry finished with 35 points.

Ashland's usual leader, Corey Gregg, was hampered by double-teams and a lot of attention when the ball was in his hands, however, he still managed 14 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. Gregg, a legit D1 prospect, recently took a visit to EKU.

Whetsel added 13 for Blazer, and one of those who gave Gregg some fits with his defense, Justin Davis, finished with 10 for the Eagles.

Other Region Tid-bits:

Russell and Greenup made it worth everybody's dollar at the Green House Friday night. The Musketeers may have lost a 2nd time to the Devils for the season, but gained some confidence in doing so. Greenup showed for most of the game they could compete, and maybe even beat their rivals. However, they have to learn how to play against Russell's press, which led the Red Devils to the win, off forcing 19 Greenup turnovers. Hayden Stephenson and Darius Jackson finished with 12 each, in a very thin stat-line for Greenup. They only had 4 players score, and played without Dustin Linthicum. It was not known why Linthicum missed the game. And yes, Russell's Kyle Skaggs led all scorers with his 26.

Olive Hill's run in the State All "A" Classic came to an end with a defeat to Heath in Frankfort.
